The queen bee is the most important individual in a honeybee colony. As the colony’s only fully fertile female, she is responsible for producing the next generation of bees and ensuring the colony remains strong and sustainable. Without a healthy, productive queen, the colony will gradually decline and eventually fail. For this reason, beekeepers closely monitor the queen’s health, egg-laying performance, and presence within the hive. Many queens are marked with a small colored dot to indicate their year of introduction, making them much easier to locate during hive inspections.

Roles and Types of Queen Bees

The queen bee’s primary responsibility is to lay fertilized eggs. After completing her mating flights early in life, she spends nearly all of her remaining days inside the hive, dedicating herself almost exclusively to egg production.

Beyond reproduction, the queen also serves as the colony’s chemical and social center. She continuously releases pheromones that are picked up by worker bees as they groom and attend to her. These pheromones are distributed throughout the hive, signaling that the colony has a healthy queen, suppressing the development of worker bee ovaries, coordinating colony activities, and attracting drones during mating flights.

Depending on the colony’s circumstances, queen bees are generally classified into three categories.

1. Swarm Queens

Swarm queens are produced when a thriving colony prepares to reproduce by swarming. Multiple queen cells are raised, allowing several virgin queens to develop. The original queen usually leaves the hive with a large group of worker bees, while one newly emerged queen eventually remains behind to head the parent colony after the rival queens have departed or been eliminated.

2. Emergency Queens

Emergency queens, sometimes called rescue queens, are raised when the colony suddenly loses its queen. This may occur because of disease, predation, accidental death, or another unexpected event. Worker bees quickly select young larvae and feed them exclusively with royal jelly, transforming them into replacement queens capable of restoring the colony.

3. Supersedure Queens

Supersedure, or replacement, queens are produced when the existing queen becomes old, injured, or less productive. Rather than swarming, the colony quietly prepares a successor by constructing one or more queen cells and feeding the selected larva a diet of royal jelly. Once the new queen is ready, she gradually takes over egg-laying duties.

Behavioral Characteristics of the Queen Bee

A queen bee can often be identified by observing how she behaves within the colony. Her movements and the reactions of surrounding workers make her stand out from the rest of the hive.

Unlike worker bees, which are constantly rushing from one task to another, the queen moves slowly and deliberately. She often pauses while inspecting cells before laying eggs, giving her a calm and purposeful appearance compared to the bustling activity around her.

Another distinctive behavior is the way worker bees respond to her presence. As the queen walks across the comb, nearby workers instinctively move aside to clear a path. They frequently surround her, grooming her body, feeding her, and receiving pheromones that they later distribute throughout the colony.

Physical Characteristics of the Queen Bee

In addition to her unique behavior, the queen bee can be recognized by several distinctive physical features.

1. Long Abdomen

The queen’s elongated abdomen is her most recognizable characteristic. It extends well beyond her folded wings, giving her a noticeably different profile from both workers and drones.

Although the queen’s wings are similar in size to those of worker bees, her much longer abdomen makes them appear proportionally shorter. Worker bees, even unusually large ones, generally have wings that reach the end of the abdomen, whereas the queen’s abdomen extends noticeably beyond them.

2. Long Legs

Queen bees have longer legs than either workers or drones. Their legs are usually light brown or golden in color, although darker queens may also have darker legs.

When resting or walking, the queen’s long legs are easy to notice because they extend well beyond the sides of her body. Unlike worker bees, her hind legs lack pollen baskets, as she never collects pollen or forages outside the hive after mating.

3. Smooth, Hairless Back

The queen’s thorax has a smoother and shinier appearance than that of worker bees and drones. While workers and drones are covered with dense hairs that give them a fuzzy look, the queen has much less visible hair, making her back appear polished.

Older worker bees may also appear less hairy because their body hairs wear away over time. However, they can still be distinguished from the queen by their shorter abdomen and smaller overall size.

4. Head Shape

The queen’s head is slightly larger than that of a worker bee, with almond-shaped compound eyes similar in form but smaller than those of drones. Fine hairs are present around the top of her head, although they are generally less noticeable than the dense body hairs found on workers.

Drone bees are easy to distinguish because their enormous eyes occupy most of the head, leaving very little room for body hairs.

5. Color Variation

Queen bees can vary considerably in color depending on their genetics. Some closely match the coloration of the worker bees in the colony, while others display golden, reddish, amber, or darker shades that make them easier to spot.

The abdomen may appear nearly solid in color or display faint striping. Some queens have deep amber bands, others are predominantly dark, while some exhibit blond, reddish, or mixed color patterns. Because of this natural variation, body shape and behavior are generally more reliable identification features than color alone.

Identifying a queen bee becomes much easier once you understand her unique appearance and behavior. Her elongated abdomen, graceful movement, smooth thorax, and the attention she receives from surrounding workers all distinguish her from the rest of the colony.

As the colony’s sole reproductive female, the queen plays an indispensable role in maintaining a healthy population. During peak season, a vigorous queen can lay well over 1,000 eggs per day. Fertilized eggs develop into worker bees or potential queens, while unfertilized eggs become drones. Whenever the colony needs a new queen—whether because of swarming, supersedure, or an emergency—the workers raise one by feeding a selected young larva exclusively with royal jelly.
